The Data Collector uses various Internet Protocol (IP) Ports depending on the type of device being accessed. While inventorying Microsoft Windows servers, the Data Collector utilizes Windows APIs which traverse the customer’s IP network as Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs). Communication with UNIX and Linux systems is accomplished via SSH or Telnet. Novell NetWare communication is accomplished via IPX/SPX which does not utilize an IP port since it is not an Internet Protocol, or customer’s NetWare configuration. Discovery uses SNMP, Telnet, NBT, HTTP, and icmp echo and TCP ping requests for port detection. SNMP processing is accomplished by issuing snmpget requests.
